Popeye and Bluto’s Bilge Rat Barges

Navigate through the rapids to rescue Popeye’s love, Olive Oyl, whom Bluto has abducted. Face the twists and turns and various fun challenges on your quest.

Popeye and Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges is a river rafting ride based on the beloved comic character ‘Popeye’.

It opened way back in 1999 and that was quite special as it was the first rafting attraction Universal had opened at any of its parks.

This ride goes on for a decent amount of time at swift but comfortable speeds and is a good way to relax after some of the more intense rides on land or water.

Toon Lagoon

The ride is located in the Toon Lagoon region of Islands of Adventure. This region is based on characters from the King Features Syndicate and Jay Ward comics.

The region also consists of one other water ride along with play areas for children to enjoy safe fun in the water. It is mostly based on water rides.

Also in Toon Lagoon are various restaurants and shops so that you can eat to your heart’s content (or maybe a little less so that you can continue going on rides) and browse cool, themed merchandise.

The only way to save the only one that Popeye loves more than spinach is an 18-foot Octopus. Are you up for the challenge?

The story of this ride is as follows: Bluto likes Olive, Olive likes Popeye, and Bluto doesn’t like that. So he takes off with Olive and you then join Popeye in his mission to rescue her.

The queue for Popeye and Bluto’s Bilge Rat Barges looks like a ferry. The guests approach Popeye’s boatload but find it closed. They then go to ‘Bluto’s Bilge Rat Barges’ and the ride begins from there.

The 6-minute ride with 12 riders seated in a circular raft is a fun, less intense one. The raft travels through the water body, twisting and dipping as you go along.

Height Requirements

Like all other rides, Popeye and Bluto’s Bilge Rat Barges also have height requirements for safety reasons. You must be at least 42 inches tall for the ride.

Also, those under 48 inches require someone to accompany them for supervision.

The Universal Express Pass applies to this water ride. Get ready for splashes of fun, adventure and excitement.
